Megan Thee Stallion is now a college graduate.

The Houston-based rapper, 26, graduated from THE Texas Southern University this afternoon. She received her bachelor’s degree in health administration from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The degree was bestowed upon her at roughly noon today:

The degree means a lot to the rapper (born Megan Pete), who started taking online classes as her music career began to blossom. “I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,” she told People magazine last year, referring to her mom, Holly Thomas, who died in March 2019 after battling brain cancer. “She saw me going to school before she passed.”

Megan (who lost her father as a teenager) was also inspired by her grandmother. “I want my big mama to be proud. She saw me going to school before she passed,” said Megan. “My grandmother that’s still alive used to be a teacher, so she’s on my butt about finishing school. I’m doing it for me, but I’m also doing it for the women in my family who made me who I am today.”

This graduation caps a game-changing year for Megan. In March, she won the Grammy for Best New Artist, and “Savage” — a duet with fellow Houstonian Beyonce — won for Best Rap Collaboration. Megan was shocked by the honor and took some time to compose herself. But when she did, she thanked her mother and grandmother: “Thank you, Lord; God is the first person that I want to thank,” Megan said. “My grandma — thank you, Nanny. Thank you, Mama, for pushing me and knowing that I was gonna be here,” she went on. “Thank you, Hotties. Thank you, Houston.”

Megan also thanked Beyonce — and for good reason. Later that night, she and Beyonce became the first female duo to win the Grammy for Best Rap Song (for “Savage”.) That was Beyonce’s 27th Grammy award; later, she made Grammy history by winning her 28th, for “Black Parade”. She now has the most Grammies of any singer, male or female.)

Megan has big plans for her degree. She told People: “I really wanted to be an administrator over a hospital, but I knew I still wanted to be Megan Thee Stallion. I was like, ‘What can I do?’” says the star. “I was like, ‘You know what, I’m gonna open an assisted-living facility and use the money that I make from rapping to open it. Then I’m gonna let my classmates run it.”
