Singer and reality television star Traci Braxton has died at the age of 50.
Her sister Toni Braxton revealed the passing on social media this morning, writing; ‘”It is with the utmost regret that we inform you of the passing of our sister, Traci. Needless to say, she was a bright light, a wonderful daughter, an amazing sister, a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and a respected performer. We will miss her dearly.”
Toni continued: ‘Traci passed this morning as the snow was falling; our angel is now a snowflake. We ask that you respect our privacy as we plan to send her home with love, celebrating her life. We are family forever. Love, The Braxton Family.”
Traci Braxton appeared on “Braxton Family Values”, which aired on weTV for seven seasons beginning in 2011. she appeared on the show alongside her sisters, Toni, Trina, Towanda, and Tamar, along with occasional appearances by their brother Michael and parents Evelyn and Michael Braxton. Traci quickly became a fan favorite, making viewers laugh even when the subject matter was serious, such as Tamar’s divorce filing from then-husband Vincent Herbert in 2019. When Evelyn Braxton made comments about Tamar and Vince’s ‘volatile’ relationship, Traci brought the laughs.
The series showcased the emotional and often fractious relationships between the sisters, but also showed moments of warmth and familial support. Viewers watched the sisters go through divorces and remarriages, through breakups and breakdowns. In the same season that displayed Tamar moving forward with divorce, Toni was seen experiencing a brief engagement to rapper and mogul Birdman. But the season also showed Traci preparing to become a grandmother (she preferred the term ‘Duchess”) when her son Kevin became a father. According to the Associated Press, Braxton was married to Kevin Surratt, with whom she appeared on the TV series “Marriage Boot Camp.” Their son, Kevin Surratt Jr., said on Instagram Saturday that his mother fought to the end.
“When I heard the news about my mother being sick, [the] first thing she said was ‘I’m going to fight and beat this,'” Kevin wrote alongside an emotional image of him embracing his mom. (Braxton had reportedly been battling esophageal cancer.) “She fought to the end and today she’s at peace. I love my mother forever and this hurts so much, but I’m at peace knowing she’s isn’t in pain anymore. I love you ma. I’m going to miss you.”
